Assyrian Gallery
The Assyrian Gallery exhibits a selection of artifacts from ancient Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Syria, and Turkey. With few exceptions, the objects were excavated by the Oriental Institute. Among the highlights of the gallery are fourteen monumental stone reliefs from the palace of the Assyrian king Sargon II (721-705 B.C.) at Khorsabad; some of the earliest metal statuettes in the world, which were excavated at Tell Judaida in southeastern Turkey; a fragment of a Dead Sea Scroll; gold and ivory objects from Megiddo (equated with ancient Armageddon); and a hieroglyphic stone inscription in ancient Hittite. A replica of the Black Obelisk of the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III is visible in the foreground.
